Is shared storage for a clustered IIS application best practice?

We are using NLB with Windows 2012 R2, and are looking at best practices for managing the configuration.  In our current 2008 environment, the content is stored locally, but in 2012 we would like to test the scenario of using a file share from our SAN that is accessible from all servers, and the IIS configuration points to this share.

My question is - is this recommended?  What are the best practices if so, considering we are using 2012?  I did see this article that references 2008 if the share were to become available:

http://www.iis.net/learn/web-hosting/configuring-servers-in-the-windows-web-platform/offline-files-for-shared-configuration

Any advice is appreciated.
