Configuring external site with AD domain of same name

Our domain controller has a domain that has the same name as our externally hosted website. We ran into a problem when we added our DNS server of the internal domain to our router. It caused the website and our email services (also hosted externally with the same people under the same domain) to go down internally but not externally. I removed the DNS from the router and everything went back to normal. I've been troubleshooting ever since.

I went ahead and added all the DNS records from the hosted site and email to the DNS server. Now I can go towww.domain.net just fine because of the www (A) record that I added. However, if I just go to domain.net then I get an HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error "The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid." I looked under the Detailed Error Information and I noticed that this resembles something IIS could say. For instance, the physical path is C:\inetpub\wwwroot.

I heard that I should create the IIS role on the DC even though I already have an IIS server with sites that are connected to the domain. I should make this site and create a URL rewrite rule so that domain.net could point to the external site of the same name. I was wondering if you guys could point me in the right direction on that.
